The pergola market often uses “bioclimatic” for an adjustable louvred roof on its own. At Pergola Pros we describe the distinction more clearly. The roof controls light, shade, airflow and passing rain above you. Add sliding glass walls and the structure becomes an enclosed bioclimatic pergola room.
That complete room is what changes the way the space can be used. The roof opens or tilts when the weather is settled, closes when it changes, and the glass can close the exposed sides without permanently shutting the garden away.
The roof is only one part of the room
Gold and Platinum use motorised rotating louvres. Open them for light and ventilation, angle them for shade or close them over the space. The Retractable goes further: its louvres can stack to one side for open sky. All three use drainage integrated into the roof structure and down through the posts.
Sliding glass walls can be specified per side, along with screens, lighting and heating. The final combination depends on how the room will be used, which directions are exposed and which model is chosen.
Glass does not make every pergola equivalent
Fitting glass to a light standard frame does not create the same specification as a made-to-measure room. The enclosure depends on the structure beneath it: the post and beam sections, spans, drainage, foundations, fixings and alignment. We specify the roof, frame and compatible glass together so the finished room is considered as one system.
The aluminium is part of the price
Extruded aluminium is a major physical cost in a substantial pergola. Our Retractable uses 200 × 200 × 3.0 mm posts. That is twice the face width and nearly twice the wall thickness of the 100 × 100 × 1.6 mm UK example in our homepage comparison. The Platinum uses 150 × 150 × 2.8 mm posts in 6063-T6, the harder temper in our range.
A single measurement does not prove the quality of a complete structure. That is why we publish the post section alongside the alloy and temper, span, roof system, drainage and written guarantee. It also explains why two products carrying the word “pergola” can sit in very different price categories.
Is a bioclimatic room worth it?
It is worth considering when the brief is a substantial room that belongs with the property: somewhere to dine, entertain or relax in more changeable conditions. It is the wrong category if the priority is simply the lowest-cost shade structure or a preset kit that can be dispatched from stock.
A glazed pergola room is still an outdoor structure rather than a house extension. How comfortable it feels in colder weather depends on the chosen enclosure, heating, exposure and how it is used.
What it costs
Most Pergola Pros made-to-measure structures cost £8,000–£20,000 supplied. Sliding glass, other accessories and specialist HIAB delivery are quoted separately. Foundations, assembly and electrical connection also need to be included in the wider project budget.
Send approximate dimensions, photographs and the way you want to use the room for an initial budget estimate. If the estimate suits your budget, we then confirm the detailed specification, CAD drawings and firm written quotation. Request an estimate, compare the three models, or read why a boxed kit and an engineered outdoor room are different purchases.
