PERGOLA PROS · MADE TO YOUR DIMENSIONS

Pergola Sizes: 3x3, 3x4, 4x4 and Everything In Between

Most pergolas are sold in catalogue sizes, which is why most pergola shopping turns into a compromise. Ours are bespoke-manufactured to your exact dimensions — so the real question is not “which size do they do?” but “which size does your garden want?” This page helps with the second one.

3x3 pergola — the compact classic

A 3m x 3m pergola is the most searched-for size in Britain, and for good reason: it covers a four-seat dining table or a pair of loungers with room to walk round, and it fits the patio most houses already have. If your brief is “somewhere to sit that ignores the forecast”, this is usually where it lands — though it is worth measuring your furniture with the chairs pulled out before settling, because that is the number people forget.

3x4 and 4x3 pergolas — the dining size

The extra metre is the difference between covering the table and covering the meal. A 3m x 4m footprint takes a six-seat table with the chairs actually pulled out, or a dining set at one end and a quietly important drinks table at the other. Which way round the 3 and the 4 go depends on your house wall and where the doors open — our measuring guide walks through the clearances.

4x4 pergolas — the outdoor room

At 4m x 4m you stop shading furniture and start owning a room. Dining and lounging zones fit under one roof, which matters in a climate where the roof is doing real work. This is also the point where louvre control earns its keep — one end open to the sun, the other closed over the seating.

5m and 6m pergolas — the full patio

5m x 3m and 6m x 3m (or 4m) structures cover a full run of patio — outdoor kitchen at one end, dining in the middle, seating at the far end. Comparable UK retractable systems are supplied in fixed sizes up to a maximum of 6m x 4m; ours are made to your dimensions, and we have supplied structures past that — a recent completed project was a 7.2m x 4m Platinum, crane-delivered like everything else. Larger structures use heavier post sections, which is engineering rather than upselling.

Lean-to pergolas, small pergolas and corner pergolas

A small pergola — 2m x 2m or 2.5m — suits a reading corner, a hot-tub surround or a courtyard where a parasol keeps blowing over. A corner position works well with a freestanding structure placed tight into the boundary. And if you have been searching “lean-to pergola” or “wall mounted pergola”: we do supply wall-mounted, but we usually steer people towards a freestanding structure on four engineered posts. A pergola is a significant purchase, and a freestanding one can be taken with you or repositioned if you extend or move house. It can also sit close against the wall where eaves height and downpipes allow, which covers most lean-to briefs without drilling into your brickwork. The measuring guide covers exactly those checks.

How to choose — and what happens to the rain

Our Commercial Range reaches a maximum 9 m × 6 m as a single structure. The Platinum reaches a maximum 7 m × 6 m as a single structure. Larger areas can use a multi-bay layout, and every size is made to your dimensions rather than chosen from a range.

Whatever the footprint, the roof closes to a sealed surface and rainwater drains away through the posts rather than off an edge onto whoever sat nearest it. Foundations are four 850mm pads regardless of size; delivery is by HIAB crane. The honest sizing method is in how to choose the right size pergola — and if you send us your dimensions and a couple of photographs, we will tell you what fits before anyone commits to anything.

Watertight with the louvres closed — and it stays that way if it is maintained. Rain drains through channels in the blades and down inside the posts, so leaves and debris left to build up will hold water back. Keep the blades, gutters and drainage clear, and check the blade seals as part of routine care. Our Stewardship Program sets out what to do and when.
